“Mamaya North America: A Celebration of Heritage and Unity”.
By B Moses & M Bah:
The Mamaya Madingo Cultural Dance is more than an event, it is a vibrant celebration of Madingo culture worldwide. Rooted in tradition, Mamaya expresses joy, unity, and identity, serving as a cultural gathering and bridge between generations.
Origins of Mamaya
Mamaya began in Guinea, West Africa, where the Madingo people created it to honor heritage through music, dance, and fellowship. It is also a way to stand together during hardships, uplifting one another through strength and solidarity.
This uplifting spirit is reflected in Madingo business circles, where mutual assistance is known as the Nyiko, Nyiko support system. Over time, the Mamaya tradition expanded beyond Guinea, carried by the diaspora across Africa, Europe, and North America.
Mission and Vision
Mamaya’s mission in North America is to preserve and promote Madingo culture while fostering unity in the community. Its vision is to bridge the gap between generations, passing down stories, traditions, and values to Madingo-American children.
By hosting Mamaya in the United States, pioneers created a platform where culture, music, and tradition meet modern expression. Mamaya has become a cultural bridge, ensuring the Madingo identity thrives and evolves in new lands.
Mamaya in North America
This year marks the 4th Anniversary Celebration of Mamaya in North America, to be held in Maryland, USA. Each year, the event has grown in size, reputation, and impact, attracting families, friends, and dignitaries worldwide.
A highlight of the U.S. Mamaya celebrations is the showcasing of Guinean superstars, offering world-class entertainment to new audiences. Past events featured legends like Sekouba Bambino, and this year highlights the renowned artist Tenin Diawara.

Beyond music, Mamaya is also a gathering of minds, bringing together business elites in the DMV area and beyond, cultural leaders, and political figures. This year’s celebration is expected to host a distinguished guest list, including Her Excellency Fatima Maada Bio, First Lady of the Republic of Sierra Leone, among many others.

The Visionaries Behind Mamaya North America
The North America Mamaya celebration reflects the dedication of pioneers determined to see Madingo culture thrive overseas. Among them are brothers and sisters who put heritage first.
These founders promised to prioritize the Madingo cause over personal recognition. As one leader said: “Heritage is greater than us. We are here today, but our children will inherit tomorrow. This is for them.”
