June 6 Annual Fundraising Gala & Community Gathering Report

The Sierra Leone Association of Reading (SLAR) proudly hosted its annual fundraising event on June 6, bringing together community members, dignitaries, business leaders, friends, supporters, and representatives from across the African Diaspora in support of the SLAR/African Diaspora Youth Center Project. The evening was beautifully painted with elegance, unity, and purpose. It served as a remarkable gathering where community members had the opportunity to meet and interact with distinguished guests and public officials who continue to support the growth and development of our diverse community.

Among the honored guests were State Senator Judy Schwank, representatives from the City of Reading Mayor’s Office, the Reading Police Chief, local business owners, community leaders, and numerous supporters who believe in the vision of empowering future generations through the establishment of a dedicated Youth Center.

The event showcased the rich diversity and strength of the African Diaspora. Our sister nations were proudly represented, including Guinea, Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal, and many other African communities from across the continent. Their presence reflected the spirit of unity, cooperation, and cultural pride that continues to define our community.

The atmosphere throughout the evening was family-friendly, welcoming, and inspiring. Guests enjoyed meaningful conversations, cultural fellowship, entertainment, and valuable networking opportunities. The event created an environment where new relationships were formed, existing partnerships were strengthened, and collective commitment to community advancement was renewed.

One of the most encouraging highlights of the evening was the tremendous support received from donors, sponsors, and community members. Their generous contributions have moved the SLAR/African Diaspora Youth Center Project significantly closer to achieving its goals. Every donation received represents an investment in the future of our youth and a commitment to creating a safe, educational, and empowering space for generations to come.

A special moment of the evening was the presentation of five Community Service and Leadership Awards. These awards recognized five deserving individuals whose dedication, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment have positively impacted our wider Diaspora community. Their contributions continue to inspire others to serve, lead, and uplift those around them.

As an annual event, the SLAR Fundraising Gala remains a cornerstone of our mission to strengthen families, empower youth, preserve culture, and build lasting community partnerships. The success of this year’s gathering demonstrates what can be accomplished when people come together with a shared vision and a common purpose.
